Open Road Conference

The 4th Open Road Conference - Open Road 2008: Multilingualism and the Information Society will feature international and Australian keynote speakers, case studies, plenary and concurrent sessions. The conference will provide an important forum to discuss and showcase innovative Information and Communication Technology developments in the area of multilingualism. 15 - 16 May 2008.

Mother's Day Classic

The Mothers Day Classic gives you the chance to make a real difference to the lives of those diagnosed with breast cancer. Make a difference by simply walking, running or sponsoring a participant, to help raise vital funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. In 2008 the Mothers Day Classic will be held on Sunday 11 May in capital cities and regional areas across Australia.

St Kilda Film Festival

St KIlda Film Festival is Australia's longest running short film festival and has been showcasing the Australian short films for soon to be 25 years. St Kilda Film Festival screens Australian short films in all genres including drama, comedy, documentary, animation and digital media. The 2008 competition will screen the top 100 short film entries received, and the competition is fierce! May 6th to May 11th, 2008.

Ballarat Heritage Festival

The 2008 Ballarat Heritage Weekend will be held on the 10th & 11th of May. Place this date into your diary now, to ensure that you don't miss out on viewing Ballarat and surrounding region's most outstanding heritage sites. The May Mother's Day Weekend will see Ballarat come to life with many grand institutional buildings, enchanting gardens, historic private residences, vintage vehicles and wonderful collections of heritage memorabilia on show to the public. Musical Wednesdays - Arts Music Video Program

From March to November the Library runs a regular program of music videos selected from our collection. These relaxed Wednesday afternoon sessions, held in the Arts Listening-Viewing Room, are a must for music fans. Enjoy free screenings of classic music and dance performances - from popular musicals to opera greats. May 14 - Lucrezia Borgia: an opera in four acts by Donizetti, 12-2.30pm.

Community Idol

Nominate your own community group by answering the questions on the entry form. The questions will help you briefly explain how and why your organisation is so special and why it stands as an inspiration to other community groups. To be eligible for the title of "2008 Australian Community Idol" you need to return your entry form by Friday, 9 May, 2008.

Travelling Treasures

The State Library of Victoria's collection experts take to the road in 2008 with a selection of the Library's treasures. The Travelling Treasures program offers audiences the chance to see some of our most precious collection items and ask questions about them. May 2008 - Bairnsdale, Sale and Warragul.

International Nursing Day

Celebrating the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. "Positive practice environments: Quality workplaces = quality patient care" is this year's theme for International Nurses Day. The International Council of Nurses commemorates this important day each year with the production and distribution of the International Nurses' Day kit. 12 May 2008.

Beechworth Harvest Celebrations

Law Week 2008

Law Week is an annual event held in May each year to promote access and understanding of our law and justice system. In 2008 Law Week takes on the theme of 'Reaching Out' with a focus on people with special needs, and others who may not otherwise find easy access to legal information and services such as rural Victorians, seniors, youth, Indigenous Australians and multicultural communities. 12 - 18 may, 2008.

Arts Law Week Victoria

The Arts Law Centre of Australia (Arts Law), in partnership with the Victorian Arts Law Consortium, and with the support of Arts Victoria and the Victoria Law Foundation, presents a series of free seminars and legal advice sessions for artists, arts organisations and creative people. Arts Law legal staff, together with Melbourne entertainment lawyers and arts professionals, will deliver free events for artists and organisations to gain skills and knowledge critical to the practice of their art. Education Week

Education Week will be celebrated by Victorian government schools and kindergartens from 18-24 May 2008. During the week, schools and kindergartens are encouraged to hold activities that engage parent and community networks while profiling their learning opportunities and achievements. Open days, art shows, musical performances and other special events are among the many activities that give an insight into the vibrant education settings in which young Victorians learn, thrive and grow.

Boroondara Literary Awards

Entry to the 2008 Boroondara Literary Awards will open on Monday 5 May. The awards consist of two main categories, Young Writers and Open Short Story. Young Writers includes sections for poetry and prose for secondary students in Year levels 7-9 and 10-12. Boroondara Schools are also invited to participate in the highly successful Writers in Schools program, where they are invited to nominate to play host to a popular writer for a seminar and workshop. This program is provided free in association with the competition. The Open Short Story section is a national competition with a special prize up for grabs for Boroondara residents. The awards are judged by successful industry professionals who are widely recognised for their work in the literary field.

Outside-in cinema

Immerse yourself in the Australian music scene, from indie rock to folk festivals. Free on the big screen in Experimedia at the State Library.
