Internet Services Announcement

Vicnet offers web design, web development, web hosting, email hosting and a variety of other IT services.

Internet Services Announcement

Over the last 12 months, the State Library of Victoria has undertaken a review of our web hosting and email services. This is part of a broader process to re-align the SLV’s services with the broader strategy of the library.

As a result, the decision has been made to close our community and fee-for-service web hosting, Domain Name & DNS management and email services (& mailboxes) effective from Friday, January 31, 2014.

Please Note: We are seeking to find an alternative solution for Historical Societies and Victorian Libraries. We will keep you informed by email as we progress. At this stage there is no need to change anything.

We will begin decommissioning our hosting servers commencing Monday, January 6, 2014, and all hosting and email services will cease on Friday, January 31, 2014. Any services (websites, email addresses, DNS settings) that you have with us will stop working on this date.

This means that you will need to select a new provider for your hosting and email services. If you wish to have a website or email address, you will need to;

  1. Select and arrange services with a new provider, and
  2. Migrate your existing website files and/or set up new email addresses to that provider.

We would encourage you to do this well prior to Friday, January 31, 2014 to ensure that everything works and so that we have time to assist you in the event that things don’t quite go to plan.

Please visit our help page for some resources and suggestions to assist your move to an alternate provider http://www.vicnet.net.au/faq

The Forward IT website offers a range of advice regarding choosing providers. http://www.forwardit.sa.gov.au/home/home_business/finding_a_web_hosting_service

To assist in this process, we have negotiated an arrangement with Web Central for paid web hosting services. Please note that the Web Central services are not free-of-charge. Please note that there is no obligation to migrate to this option. The SLV receives no financial benefit from this arrangement as any revenue sharing options have been channelled back into a 20% rate reduction for clients. Full details of their plans can be viewed here (http://www.webcentral.com.au/hosting/web-hosting). Should you not wish to use Web Central, the Forward IT website offers a range of advice regarding choosing providers.

However, regardless of your choice of provider, we will need to know two things from you please by Monday, November 25, 2013:

  1. Do you wish to keep your website / services and move these to a new provider? (if the answer is no, we will de-commission your services), and
  2. Do you want to take advantage of the Web Central arrangement for paid web hosting?

Important: Please note that if we do not hear from you by Monday, November 25, 2013, we will understand that you no longer need your website or email services and will begin preparation to de-commission your services.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support and for using our services. We look forward to providing you with assistance in moving your services with as little disruption as possible.

Whilst we are ceasing these services, we will be developing new services and programs that support Victoria’s historical and library organisations as part of the library’s strategic plan. Services to historical and heritage societies in Victoria and Victorian libraries will continue. You can find out more about the plan at http://www.slv.vic.gov.au/about-us/plans-policies/corporate-plan-2013-16

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you by Monday, November 25, 2013 and assisting you further.
